TEST DRIVE PLUGIN

With ProPhoto you can begin customizing your new design while leaving your current theme/design active.  If you choose this option be mindful that any changes you make to your current pages or post “content” while customizing will be reflected on your current theme/design that the public sees.

COMING SOON/MAINTENANCE DESIGN

ProPhoto also provides a “Coming Soon/Maintenance” design built in that you can set as your “Live” design while you work on your new site.  It is perfectly acceptable to place your site under maintenance or construction while you customize your new design.  This built in design assigns the coming soon template to all pages and posts so you can edit your site without public eyes.

STAGING WORDPRESS

You also can create a “Staging” WordPress installation on your domain to design/customize your design while leaving your current site as it is until you are ready to launch your new design.   There are several ways to accomplish this, you can create a staging site on a subdomain, folder, or temporary url depending on your hosting.  This is a little more advanced, but provides the most flexibility while customizing as it does not effect your current site in anyway and allows you to design, experiment, break things and make things perfect on your own time.

DIVI

COMING SOON/MAINTENANCE DESIGN

With Divi you can create a Coming Soon/Maintenance Page using the “blank” post type selection in the page editor and set this page and your Static Home Page.  Only add information you want to appear to visitors while you are working on your site, such as contact information, social media links, logo, etc.  The “blank” post type will remove the header, menu, and the footer from this page.  If visitors have a specific url they will still be able to see those areas of your site.

There are also third party plugins that you can install that will lock down your entire site for maintenance while you work behind the scenes.
